Overview

TIBCO is well-known for its business integration software used to help organizations create a service-oriented architecture (SOA) and improve business process management (BPM). So, it was only a matter of time before it would formally get into the cloud computing market. In June 2009, they did just that with the announcement of TIBCO Silver, which has been positioned as "the industry's first rapid application delivery platform designed specifically for building and deploying cloud applications inside Global 2000 IT environments."

TIBCO Silver leverages the company's core middleware software and blends their knowledge and experience with building SOA environments to come up with a platform that is "built from the ground up" for cloud computing within the enterprise. In addition, it includes "self-aware" components that support both automatic elasticity of compute resources and dynamically extends various levels of authorization, authentication, and encryption policies. The "self-aware" elasticity gets extended to how it manages Service Level Agreements (SLAs), deploying resources as needed to make sure the SLA is met.

Value Proposition

TIBCO has laid out three core elements to its value proposition: Enterprise-ready; Self-aware Elasticity; and Broad Language Support. This means it is:

  • Built from the ground up to support cloud application delivery, TIBCO Silver addresses scalability, availability and governance challenges of cloud computing in an enterprise.
  • Features the ability to shrink and scale automatically at the platform level. This "self-aware" capability also allows for various levels of authorization, authentication, and encryption policies to be dynamically configured.
  • Provides a set of container support for Java, C++, and Ruby with support for .NET and Spring that provides the flexibility to construct a composite application using services developed in various programming languages and to deploy composite applications with one click.
