Overview
Geva Perry, in his blog Thinking Out Cloud, made an interesting observation that "...Ruby developers are the cloud generation." The Ruby language and Ruby on Rails, the application framework, are very popular among those building next-generation web sites and web services. It shouldn't come as much of surprise, then, that he goes on to say "the Ruby community is essentially skipping traditionally on-premise installed software." In short, all the application services that a developer needs are maintained in the cloud, so the developer can focus on writing code and not the underlying infrastructure.
Heroku provides a multi-tenant cloud Platform as a Service (PaaS) for developers using Ruby on Rails. It incorporates open source technology (e.g. Varnish, a high-performance HTTP accelerator; Thin, a fast, stable Ruby app server) with some custom code to provide a seamless cloud environment. It delivers an "instant Ruby platform," giving developers the scalability, reliability, etc. they need without having to think too much about it. Heroku is engineered for the Ruby and cloud generation.
Value Proposition
Heroku is an "instant Ruby platform" that's designed to give developers the scalability, reliability, connectivity, etc. they need without having to think too much about the infrastructure itself. This allows developers to put their time and effort behind the development of the application, rather than all the time-consuming work of building, deploying, and maintaining the environment.
Products & Services
- Heroku is an integrated, highly-customizable, cloud platform for Ruby on Rails application development. For example, developers can choose a shared cluster or dedicated database for more performance, as well as, a variety of other things like a choice of backup options and cron support. Applications run in a Dyno Grid, a self-contained process or environment, that provides on-demand compute power as needed. Apps are securely partitioned and the servers are managed by the platform, improving performance and manageability.
