Overview

Cloudera has come a long way in less than a year, garnering a lot of attention from investors, the media and potential customers. Cloudera has based its business around Hadoop, the open source implementation of MapReduce, with the goal of making it far easier for organizations of all types to store, manage and analyze very large volumes (i.e. terabytes or petabytes) of data - whether structured or unstructured - in an economical and efficient way.

Initially developed by Google, MapReduce was developed to solve the company's need to more effectively index the Web thereby providing better search results and, in turn, greater revenue-generating capabilities. Google's success speaks for itself. Cloudera seeks to bring that capability to enterprise customers through its services and support for Hadoop.

Cloudera recently secured a second round of venture funding from Greylock Partners for $6 million in June 2009, bringing its total funding to $11 million. An initial round of funding came from Accel Partners, which also participated in the most recent round.

Value Proposition

Cloudera offers a commercial version of Hadoop, making it easier to install, configure and manage, while bringing the benefits of storing and processing very large data sets to a wider range of organizations, including enterprise customers.

Because data is growing exponentially, companies need a better way to handle it, make sense of it and put it to good use. Cloudera leverages Hadoop and cloud computing to shift application reliability and scalability from a hardware dependency to one managed by software.
