Overview

Canonical is the commercial enterprise behind Ubuntu, one of the most popular open source distributions of the Linux operating system. The company provides support, engineering and professional services, as well as, hardware and software certification for Ubuntu.

When it comes to Ubuntu, things have gotten very interesting, very fast as they have extended their focus into areas such as cloud computing.

To that end, Canonical announced the release of Ubuntu 9.1 Server Edition, which includes the Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UCE), in late October 2009. The Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud aims to give developers all the components they need to efficiently and effectively build a cloud computing environment for the enterprise.

Furthermore, UCE allows for both public and private cloud deployments. It uses the same APIs as Amazon EC2 through integration with Eucalpytus Systems' open source cloud platform. The combination of Ubuntu 9.1 and Eucalyptus's software makes it easier for developers to build private clouds.
