Putting the Cloud Before the Horse argues the importance of architecture and automation when implementing a cloud strategy for the enterprise. Lori MacVittie says to not confuse virtualization with building a cloud environment, the benefits of the later - autonomic, scalability and availability - will far outstrip the former as you move away from personnel-intensive operations.
Speaking of automatic scalability and self-provisioning, check out my synopsis of the recent CloudWorld event and, in particular, Lew Tucker's presentation now available on ZDNet. Tucker is the CTO of cloud computing at Sun.
As I wrote about earlier in the week, VMware's acquisition of SpringSource is a good strategic move as they aim to grow their business beyond virtualization, towards cloud computing with a promising Platform as a Service (PaaS) solution. If you're interested in additional analysis on the acquisition, I recommend Forrester's James Staten and his blog post VMWare Completes The PaaS to vCloud, as well as Jay Lyman's article for the 451 Group: VMware-SpringSource about cloud, competition, and open source in that order.
