Eucalyptus and GroundWork Team Up to Improve Management of Private Clouds

Marten Mickos, of MySQL fame and who was recently appointed CEO of Eucalyptus, has hit the ground running as he tries to establish his company and open source software as a viable contender in the cloud computing market. The companies issues a joint press release explaining "that they have partnered to deliver complete monitoring and management of applications running in a Eucalyptus private cloud environment through the GroundWork Monitor Enterprise Cloud solution. The GroundWork Monitor Enterprise Cloud provides detailed monitoring for Eucalyptus clouds as well as for traditional data center resources and public clouds such as Amazon Web Services (AWS)."

In an article by Charles Babcock in InformationWeek delved into the announcement further and concluded:

"If you look at this combination and think about how the popular Linux distribution, Ubuntu, already includes Eucalyptus, you begin to see a new open source LAMP-type stack taking shape. That earlier combination of Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP was used on many Web sites. The new combination of Ubuntu, Eucalyptus and GroundWork, may extend the reach of open source combinations into private cloud operations...GroundWork has made strong headway into a field previously dominated by commercial code. [Peter] Jackson [CEO of GWOS] and Marten Mickos, the new CEO at Eucalyptus, may be just the people to drive a new cloud open source stack into prominent use."
