Cloud Security Symposium: Cloud Interoperability

I just got through listening to John Willis' Cloud Droplet #89 about the CSA Cloud Security Symposium, which took place yesterday in McLean, VA. He was part of a panel on cloud interoperability. I liked how Willis took an irreverent position -- It just doesn't matter...Yet -- to enhance the discussion and to be thought provoking. In his words, what should define cloud interoperability? And, what kind of distance do we have to travel to get there?

His point was admonish the audience to be both realistic and bold. Today, we're at the beginning of journey as we're "just getting comfortable with virtualization" and no one is really providing interoperability between clouds. Thought that's not going stop the momentum and the goal. That goal is namely: a seamless, secure, and controlled way to move data and applications across public and private clouds.

In addition, Willis brings our attention to another presenter worth listening to: Glenn Brunette, Chief Security Architect and Distinguished Engineer at Sun Microsystems. Brunette leads Sun's security strategy for their cloud computing initiative, among other things. So, if you continue listening to Willis' podcast you'll quickly find out that Burnette has a new fan; and it's easy to see why. His presentation covered a lot of ground around virtualization, resource management, cloud management, and cloud interoperability. Lots of interesting and thought provoking stuff interspersed with comments on Amazon, Rackspace, rPath and 3tera. You may also want to check out his Security Weblog for further reading.
