Amazon Signals Cloud Platform Ambitions with Latest Announcement

Amazon continues to build out its cloud computing arsenal, this time signaling its intent by adding more platform as a service (Paas) functionality to Amazon Web Service (AWS). The company announced the beta release of Amazon Simple Notification Services (SNS) a web service aimed at developers (and businesses) "that makes it easy to set up, operate and send notifications from the cloud." Ultimately, they want to attract developers by making it easier for them to build applications on AWS. With Amazon SNS the cost and complexity of creating a messaging system is taken off the table. It's also integrated with Amazon EC2 and SQS.

"Building and maintaining messaging systems is the type of undifferentiated heavy lifting that AWS works to remove for our customers," said Adam Selipsky, Vice President of Amazon Web Services. "An easy-to-implement and highly scalable notification service like Amazon SNS will enable businesses to avoid building this component themselves. And, for entrepreneurs, Amazon SNS makes it operationally and financially viable to create new types of applications that are heavily reliant on push notifications."
